Butterfly Counting Clip Cards

What Is One-to-One Correspondence?
One-to-one correspondence is a foundational math skill that preschool and kindergarten-aged kids learn. It is the ability to say a number for each object counted. One-to-one correspondence is the knowledge that each number has a corresponding quantity.
When counting the butterflies on a card, invite kids to touch each butterfly and say each number out loud.

Preparing Butterfly Counting Clip Cards
This is a low-prep activity. Download and print the counting cards on cardstock. Next, laminate and cut out the cards. Gather some wooden clothespins, and you’ve got a fun and engaging math center!
Ideas for Use
For this activity, kids pick a card and count the number of butterflies in the box. To ensure kids are counting correctly, have them touch each object. Once the kids have counted the butterflies, they cover the matching number on the card with a clothespin.
If you do not have clothespins on hand you can use other manipulatives like mini erasers, bingo chips, small counters or play dough.

Extend the Activity
Make this activity even more hands-on and interactive by using it with a sensory bin. Use whichever bin filler you may have on hand, and place magnet or wooden numbers inside. After kids count the butterflies and cover the number, they can search through the sensory bin to find the matching number.
For some ideas on how to create or set up sensory bins, check out this post here.
Another way you can use these butterfly counting clip cards is to use them with play dough. Roll out some play dough, and give kids small manipulatives such as gems, beads, mini erasers, or bingo chips.
After the kids have counted the butterflies and identified the matching number, they can place the same number of mini erasers on the play dough. This reinforces one-to-one correspondence and adds another level of fine motor practice.
