Preparing the Back-to-School Alphabet Matching Activity
This printable letter-matching activity is easy to prepare. Download the freebie and print it out. Next, laminate the letter cards and cut them apart.
Materials
- Pencil and Pencil Case Letter Match Printable
- Scissors
- Crayons or pencil
- Optional: laminator and laminating sheets, dry-erase markers
How to Use
If your learners are not yet familiar with all the letters of the alphabet, place a few uppercase and lowercase letter pairs on the table. By limiting the number of letters, kids won’t become overwhelmed and discouraged. When they feel more confident and are able to identify and match letter pairs, you can introduce more letters in the game.
There is also a recording sheet included in this activity. After kids make the letter pairs, have them find the letters on the recording sheet and trace them.
Ideas for Use
Want to use these printables multiple times? You can laminate them or place them in dry-erase pockets, and use them with dry-erase markers.
You know me, I love a good sensory bin! As I always suggest, use a sensory bin to make it more fun and playful. Place the letter cards in the bin and invite kids to search for the letter pairs in the bin.

Extend the Activity
Turn this letter-matching game into an alphabetical-order activity. Kids can either place the uppercase letter cards in alphabetical order or the lowercase ones.
You can turn this activity into a fun and simple letter formation activity as well. Fill a shallow tray with salt and invite kids to use a finger to write the letters in the salt after making a letter pair.
Create a memory game by flipping over the cards. Kids will flip over two cards at a time to try and match uppercase and lowercase letters together.
