Fun Free Summer Counting Mats

Summer is just around the corner and school is almost done for the year! Today I am sharing a simple math activity for practicing counting to 10. It is a set of summer counting mats that cover numbers 1 to 10.

These counting mats include a traceable number, pictures to count, and a ten frame to fill in. With fun summer colors and pictures preschool, and kindergarten kids will enjoy using these counting mats.

Use these free Summer Counting Mats for kids to practice counting. While kids use these mats they are practicing a variety of skills. The skills include:

  • number identification
  • counting
  • 1:1 correspondence
  • fine motor skills

Preparing the Summer Counting Mats

This math center requires little preparation. Download the resource, print, and laminate the pages. You can either cut the pages or leave 2 mats on a page. You may also place the mats in sheet protector pockets.

Ideas for Use

To be able to reuse these counting mats you can opt to laminate them or place them in dry-erase pockets. This way kids can also use dry-erase markers and can reuse the mats!

Invite kids to use fun manipulatives like play dough. Kids can trace and count the images, then roll and place small play dough balls on the ten frame.

If your kids love mini erasers like mine do, use them as counters to fill in the ten-frame.

The number of the number mat is traced and the ten frame is filled in using balls of play dough.

Extend the Activity

These Summer Counting Mats are also great for learning to make 10. Kids will identify the number on the mat and count the number of pictures. Next, they place the corresponding number of balls of play dough on the ten frame. After, they count how many empty squares there are. Using a different color, kids place balls of play dough on the remaining squares.

You can even have kids write the equations for each number once they have filled in the ten frame. It is a fun visual way to practice addition fact fluency within 10.

This graphic shows the number 4 counting mat.  It is being used to practice making 10.  Kids will identify the number, and count the pictures. Next, using one color of play dough they will place 4 balls on the ten frame. With another color they will fill in the remaining boxes, and count them out.
